How do I connect my iPod or iPhone?

If you have an iPod/iPhone or similar device and want to connect it to a Rotel model that has a front panel Media Player input, you can do the following.

A 3.5mm (1/8”) stereo input socket for a “Media Player” is provided on the front of the Rotel model. To select it, turn the front panel LISTENING control to AUX or press the AUX 1 button on the remote control.  Any portable stereo cassette, compact disc player or hard disc playback device can be connected via this input. If the Media Player input is connected to the headphone outputs of the player note that you may need to adjust the volume control on the player for sound to be heard. If the sound is loud and distorted turn down the volume on the player. If the sound is not loud enough, even when the Rotel volume control is turned up fairly high, then carefully turn up the volume control on the player.

Note: When the 3.5mm (mini jack) is inserted into the Media Player socket the rear input called AUX is disconnected. Removing the 3.5mm plug from the Media player socket will allow the rear AUX input to function.

This solution is the simplest, but also tends to be the lowest quality as well as this method is utilizing the digital to analog converters and analog circuitry in the iPod or iPhone, which are not typically high quality.

A better solution to consider is an external iPod dock or USB DAC, such as the RDD-1580. The DAC would connect to an analog input on your Rotel model similar to the method above, but with these devices you would then either dock your iPod or connect to the DAC using the normal USB connection cable. The advantage of this method is when the audio from the iPod is obtained via the USB cable it is the digital audio, which allows the critical digital to analog conversion steps to be handled by the DAC and would offer a significant sonic improvement compared to a direct connection via cable. Another advantage is you can usually use a remote control for the DAC to handle basic transport controls like Play/Pause/Track selection, rather than having to manually make these changes on the iPod itself.

How do I control the unit via IP?

Many Rotel products feature an Ethernet network connection that can be used in conjunction with the Rotel iOS App or a third-party control system to provide control of your system over the network.

The Rotel Apps are readily available for download in the Apple App Store. If you are interested in learning more about third party network control options, we would recommend contacting your authorized Rotel dealer for more information about the various options available.

For users in EU and UK, please note the below important update:

Recent power regulations mandate that while in Standby mode a product can draw no more than 3W of power, and will further lower the maximum allowed draw to 2W in 2019.

As a result of these new regulations, it is regrettably no longer possible to retain power to the network circuitry while in standby mode as this would draw above the maximum allowed power. The Network Wakeup option has been removed from the setup menu for units sold in the UK and EU markets. This means IP control can no longer be used to power-on a Rotel device from Standby mode.

As an alternative, Rotel models offer 2-way RS232 control as well. All commands available over IP will also work with RS232 and many of the same control systems that work over IP also offer RS232 connection options. For more information or questions regarding control system integration we recommend discussing this with your authorized Rotel.

How do I get the benefits of Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD?

Most Rotel surround systems will allow you to enjoy the benefits of these new audio formats, but the exact method to go about this does vary depending on the model you own. Please refer below for details on how to best connect your system to play back these HD formats.

  • RSX-1550, RSX-1560, RSX-1562, RSP-1570, RSP-1572: The 15 series processors and receivers feature HDMI1.3 or newer hardware and can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio signals via the HDMI connection from a Blu-Ray player. Just connect an HDMI cable from the output of the Blu-Ray player to one of the HDMI inputs on the processor. Then using the INPUT SETUP menu of the Rotel make sure that the Rotel processor is set to the appropriate HDMI input and the audio input should be set to "HDMI Audio". Be sure that the Blu-Ray player has been configured to output the HDMI audio as bitstream and any secondary audio options should be disabled in the player to ensure the HD audio content is streamed to the Rotel processor.
  • RSP-1069, RSX-1058: In addition to the multi channel analog connection method mentioned above, you may also use the HDMI audio input to get high definition audio from your Blu-Ray player. Many Blu-Ray players offer onboard decoding of Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD and can stream the decoded high definition audio signal as a multichannel linear PCM (LPCM) signal via the HDMI output. The Rotel processor can then decode and process the high definition audio from this LPCM audio signal. For more detailed information on this method, please refer to our "HDMI: What You Need to Know" article under the section "Audio Formats and HDMI 1.3".
  • RSP-1068, RSP-1098, RSX-1057, RSX-1067: To decode Dolby True HD and DTS-HD you will need to connect the multi-channel analog outputs from your Blu-Ray player to the multi-channel inputs on your Rotel product. This will utilize the internal decoding capabilities of your player allowing you the audible benefits of the lossless codecs. This requires purchasing a Blu-Ray player that provides onboard HD audio decoding and provides multichannel analog outputs.
