How can I stream music from services such as Pandora, Tidal or Spotify to my Rotel system?

If you want to add streaming music to your Rotel system there are several different ways you can do so.

  • Add a streaming player such as Sonos, AppleTV or Roku to the system to stream via an HDMI or optical digital connection (be sure to check which services are supported first, as not all services are available on every player).
  • Connect a PC or Mac computer to an input on the Rotel and stream the audio from a web browser or app on the computer. If your computer has an HDMI, optical or coax digital audio output these would be the preferred connections, but analog audio would also work.
  • Alternatively, other sources such as some smart TVs or Blu-Ray players for example also support streaming services so these may also be used to stream music to your Rotel system.

How can I use my headphones with my surround receivers or preamp processor?

You can use headphones with your surround processor or receiver by purchasing an optional headphone amplifier. They are readily available and come in a range of prices from several suppliers. To use these devices it will require that you connect the headphone amplifier using the Left and Right analog outputs to either the "Zone Out" or "Tape Out" connection on the receiver. The Zone Output is recommended to allow you to use the internal Volume Control for that zone. If your Headphones or Headphone Preamp has a volume control the "Tape Out" jacks would work fine.

Please note that for sources to be available for the headphones the sources must be connected with analog audio connections. As an example: If you have a Cable or Satellite Box connected to the "Video 1" input using a Digital Coaxial or Optical cable you would ALSO have to connect the Left and Right Analog Outputs from the Cable or Satellite Box to the "Video 1" Left and Right analog inputs for the source to be available to the headphones.

How do I access Sirius radio stations?

Effective October 1, 2015, SiriusXM stopped supporting version 1.0 of their internet streaming protocol.  This is the protocol Rotel internet radio tuners utilized for streaming SiriusXM services. Due to the protocol change by SiriusXM, Rotel internet radio tuners will no longer be able to receive and play these stations.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

You must have the "Premium CD quality internet radio" upgrade on a Sirius account for it to work with the RDG-1520 or RCX-1500.

This guide is intended for users who cannot connect their Internet Radio to Sirius. The common error is the radio will display "change password or username" after the user types in their Sirius user name and password in the Internet radio. Please use the following as a guide to assist in trouble shooting your connection to the Sirius premium internet radio service:

  1. Verify your Internet radio is connected to your broadband internet network.
  2. Verify that you can listen to other internet radio stations i.e. Non Sirius radio stations.
If you cannot listen to other radio stations or you cannot connect to your broadband internet network then you will need to first resolve those issues BEFORE trouble shooting your Sirius connection.
  3. Verify that you currently have Sirius "Premium" internet radio service. The Internet radio will not connect to the standard Sirius Internet radio service. You must upgrade to "Premium" Internet radio service (also known as CD-quality internet radio Sirius package) before attempting to enter in your Sirius user name and number in your radio.
To Verify you have Sirius "Premium" Internet radio service you can call Sirius or log on to the Sirius media player on your computer and verify that you have both standard and premium internet radio service. You can check by going to this link: https://www.siriusxm.com/player/.
When the media player launches there will be two icons: a standard icon and a premium icon. If you are able to toggle back and forth between the standard and premium icons on the Sirius media player on your computer and play music on your computer when the Premium icon is chosen then you have premium CD quality service. If the media player does not play music when you press the premium icon you will need to upgrade to the service which is $2.99 per month (as of July 2009 - price is subject to change). You can update your Sirius package at https://www.siriusxm.com/addSIR.
The package is "Upgrade to CD quality sound". Simply press the "Upgrade now" button.
  4. Verify that your Sirius User name or Password is typed in correctly. Please ensure you do not have a blank (an empty space) in the front of your user name or password. Your Sirius password is UPPER and lower case sensitive. When you enter your Sirius user name and password on the radio please note that the 1st set of letters displayed on the radio are all UPPER case letters. Please scroll to the right until you see the 2nd set of letters on the display. These letters will be lower case. Choose the lower case letters when required (Your Sirius user name and password may have a mixture of lower and UPPER case so you will have to scroll between the two different sets of letters on the radio).
After you enter in your user name then choose "end" which is to the left of the list of the upper case letters, or press the "Reply" key on the remote or front panel. Then enter in your password and choose "end" or hit "Reply" again. You should now see the Sirius station line up.

Note: Sirius Premium Internet radio service is not available outside the continental US.

How do I connect my iPod or iPhone?

If you have an iPod/iPhone or similar device and want to connect it to a Rotel model that has a front panel Media Player input, you can do the following.

A 3.5mm (1/8”) stereo input socket for a “Media Player” is provided on the front of the Rotel model. To select it, turn the front panel LISTENING control to AUX or press the AUX 1 button on the remote control.  Any portable stereo cassette, compact disc player or hard disc playback device can be connected via this input. If the Media Player input is connected to the headphone outputs of the player note that you may need to adjust the volume control on the player for sound to be heard. If the sound is loud and distorted turn down the volume on the player. If the sound is not loud enough, even when the Rotel volume control is turned up fairly high, then carefully turn up the volume control on the player.

Note: When the 3.5mm (mini jack) is inserted into the Media Player socket the rear input called AUX is disconnected. Removing the 3.5mm plug from the Media player socket will allow the rear AUX input to function.

This solution is the simplest, but also tends to be the lowest quality as well as this method is utilizing the digital to analog converters and analog circuitry in the iPod or iPhone, which are not typically high quality.

A better solution to consider is an external iPod dock or USB DAC, such as the RDD-1580. The DAC would connect to an analog input on your Rotel model similar to the method above, but with these devices you would then either dock your iPod or connect to the DAC using the normal USB connection cable. The advantage of this method is when the audio from the iPod is obtained via the USB cable it is the digital audio, which allows the critical digital to analog conversion steps to be handled by the DAC and would offer a significant sonic improvement compared to a direct connection via cable. Another advantage is you can usually use a remote control for the DAC to handle basic transport controls like Play/Pause/Track selection, rather than having to manually make these changes on the iPod itself.

How do I connect my iPod or iPhone?

You can connect your iPhone or iPod to Rotel models with a front USB port using the standard Apple USB to 30-pin or Lightning connector cable for a direct connection.

Alternatively, you can insert the bluetooth USB dongle into the front USB port and pair your iPhone or bluetooth-capable iPod models to the Rotel device to stream music wirelessly through the front USB input.

How do I connect my iPod or iPhone?

If you have an iPod/iPhone or similar device and want to connect it to a Rotel model that does not have a front USB or dedicated media player input, you can do the following.

The simplest solution is to use a headphone to RCA adapter cable. This cable should have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack on one end, and a pair of stereo RCA connections on the other. Simply connect the RCA end of the cable to an empty input on your Rotel device (do not use the PHONO input, however), then connect the other end of the cable to the headphone output of the iPod. Just select the input on the Rotel that you just connected to and play! Note that you will probably need to turn up the volume on the iPod to near maximum to get enough output on the system, as this method does use the internal volume controls on the iPod/iPhone as well as the Rotel system volume.

How do I control the unit via IP?

Many Rotel products feature an Ethernet network connection that can be used in conjunction with the Rotel iOS App or a third-party control system to provide control of your system over the network.

The Rotel Apps are readily available for download in the Apple App Store. If you are interested in learning more about third party network control options, we would recommend contacting your authorized Rotel dealer for more information about the various options available.

For users in EU and UK, please note the below important update:

Recent power regulations mandate that while in Standby mode a product can draw no more than 3W of power, and will further lower the maximum allowed draw to 2W in 2019.

As a result of these new regulations, it is regrettably no longer possible to retain power to the network circuitry while in standby mode as this would draw above the maximum allowed power. The Network Wakeup option has been removed from the setup menu for units sold in the UK and EU markets. This means IP control can no longer be used to power-on a Rotel device from Standby mode.

As an alternative, Rotel models offer 2-way RS232 control as well. All commands available over IP will also work with RS232 and many of the same control systems that work over IP also offer RS232 connection options. For more information or questions regarding control system integration we recommend discussing this with your authorized Rotel.
