Understanding Bluetooth Standards: A Dive into Audio Performance

Over the years, Bluetooth standards have evolved significantly, each new version bringing improvements in speed, range, and overall performance. In this blog, we’ll explore how these advancements have impacted audio performance across different Bluetooth versions and Rotel’s implementation of the Bluetooth evolving standards. 

The Evolution of Bluetooth: From 1.0 to 5.3

Bluetooth technology launched in 1999 with version 1.0, which had a maximum speed of 732.2 kb/s to 1 Mbps and a range of 10 meters. As we progressed to Bluetooth 2 and beyond, Enhanced Data Rate (EDR) was introduced, increasing speeds and improving audio quality. 

Rotel first included Bluetooth as a music source in 2010 on the RCX-1500 providing the convenience of a truly wireless connection. Current Rotel models utilize Bluetooth 5.1 delivering our longest range and highest audio quality to date. 

The most recent and biggest change came in May 2022 with Bluetooth 5.0, and its subsequent iterations. This brought a further increase in speed from 4.0 to 50 Mbps with an increase to 240 meters and big changes to how audio can be transmitted. 

Impact on Audio Performance

Back in 1999 when the world was introduced to the transmission of audio through portable products and wireless headphones, audiophiles were quick to dismiss the technology as it did not compete in quality with its wired counterpart. However, we have seen with each revision in Bluetooth considerable improvements in sound performance.

Those improvements are down to the practical difference between Bluetooth audio formats, the compression used, and the maximum bandwidth (data transfer) of audio data that can be transmitted wirelessly. 

Speed and Quality

The speed of data transfer directly affects audio quality. Higher speeds allow for less compression and better sound quality. Bluetooth 5.3 supports high-definition codecs like LDAC (a proprietary format used by Sony on specific products) and aptx HD which can transmit audio with a bit rate of up to 576 kbps.

Codecs: The Heart of Audio Transmission

Some of the commonly available codecs include SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX HD.

  • Compression: All codecs are lossy, but some offer better compression.
