Is there any way to dim or turn off the front display?

There is no display dimmer on these models; however it is possible to turn off the front display by pressing and holding the Menu button on the remote for 5 seconds. The display will then turn off, reappearing temporarily whenever any change is made to the system. To turn the display back on, press the Menu button on the remote again, or power the unit off. The display will be reset to normal when the unit is powered back on.

Is there any way to disable the subwoofer output in 2 Channel stereo, but leave it active in Dolby Digital and dts?

The original designs of the RSP-1066, RSX-1055 and RSX-1065 did not allow this to be done, short of turning off the subwoofer in the Speaker setup menu before using 2 Channel mode. However, the ability to disable the subwoofer output for different surround modes, including stereo, has been added in a later software update for the unit.

With software versions listed below and beyond, the subwoofer output can be disabled by accessing the SUB SETUP menu from the OSD, and for each surround mode the subwoofer level can be adjusted to +10dB and –9dB.  Lowering the subwoofer level below –9dB will display OFF, and will disable subwoofer output for this DSP mode.  Using this method, the subwoofer output can be separately enabled or disabled for 2, 5, and 7 Channel Stereo;  the 4 Music Modes; all Dolby and all dts modes.

  • RSP-1066: V1.48 or V2.24 and later
  • RSX-1055: V1.48 or V2.24 and later
  • RSX-1065: V1.55 or V2.22 and later

Is there any way to disable the subwoofer output in 2 Channel stereo, but leave it active in Dolby Digital and dts?

Yes, you can make a change such as this by using the ADVANCED SPEAKER settings. This settings menu allows you to define custom speaker configurations and bass management settings based on the surround mode. So you could in theory set up your receiver to play Dolby Digital and dts soundtracks using all SMALL loudspeakers with a Subwoofer, and configure Stereo sources to play with just 2 LARGE front speakers and no subwoofer.

The Advanced Speaker settings menu is located with the SPEAKER setup menu of the On Screen Display.

My computer doesn't have a serial port - how can I update the Rotel software?

The software for this unit can be updated either through the rear panel RS232 port or over the internet if the unit is connected using the Ethernet connection. If your computer does not have a serial port we recommend using the internet based upgrade which is handled via the setup menu for the unit.

My computer doesn't have a serial port - how can I update the Rotel software?

You will need a USB to Serial Port Adapter. There are many different adapters on the market today that plug into a USB port on the computer and will function as a serial port for connecting to a Rotel component for updating.

It is important when selecting an adapter to make sure you install the latest available drivers for the adapter to ensure that the upgrades go smoothly. This is particularly important when using the adapters on newer operating systems such as Windows 8. We recommend ideally checking the website of the manufacturer for the latest drivers before connecting and installing the adapter.

My Rotel has stopped responding to the remote control.

One of the features of many Rotel products is the ability to switch between two completely different sets of IR codes. The purpose of these alternative IR code sets is to allow systems to utilize more than one Rotel device in the same area (for example large multiroom systems that may have centrally located equipment) without conflicting IR codes causing problems. However, on occasion it is possible to accidentally set the Rotel device to this code set which results in the unit no longer responding to the original remote.

To restore the unit to its original IR code set, simply do the following:

  • To revert the IR code library from the alternative code set to the original IR library, first press the "Tuner" and "1" button simultaneously on the remote (or "FM" and "1" if your remote is a model that does not have a "Tuner" button).
  • Now press and hold the "1" button on the remote control for 10 seconds. The front panel of the Rotel device should display either "RMC : 2->1" or "Audio Code Set 2 ---> 1" to indicate the change. On models that do not have a front display the LED on the volume knob will flash rapidly to confirm the change.

Repeat the above procedure and press “2” key instead of “1” to change the unit to the alternative remote code set.

My Rotel HDMI surround receiver/processor is on and there is video, but no sound.

Check the VIDEO/HDMI menu on the on screen Setup Menu and make sure the unit is set to AMP MODE. If the unit has been set to TV MODE, this setting will Mute all audio output from the receiver and instead routes the sound out the HDMI output to be played through your TV speakers.

If this is a separates system with a Rotel processor and power amplifier, also make sure the 12V trigger switch on the Rotel amplifier is in the OFF position and verify all cables/connections between the processor and amplifier are correct.

Rotel Feature Quick Reference: Signal Sense

Signal Sense is a feature available on several Rotel models and is configured via either the On-Screen Display (where applicable) or front display Setup Menu.

Feature Summary:

  • The Rotel device will monitor a specific input for an audio signal.
  • If the unit is currently in Standby mode and a signal is detected, it will automatically power the unit up to the signal sense input.
  • If the unit is powered on and no signal is detected for 10 minutes, it will automatically power off.
  • If the unit is powered off manually (i.e. by the remote control or RS232/IP connection) while the connected audio source is still playing, signal sense will only resume after the audio signal has stopped for a continuous 10 minutes.
  • In the original feature design, the Rotel device must be listening to the selected Signal Sense input when it is in Standby mode for the feature to be active. For example, if the unit was configured to monitor the Coax 1 input for audio, and the unit was set to the Optical 1 input when it was powered off it would not power the unit up if a signal was detected on Coax 1)
  • With later software updates, most models (excluding RC-1590) now support Signal Sense regardless of the last input selected when the unit is powered off. Using the previous example, even though the unit was last powered off on the Optical 1 input, if a signal was detected on Coax 1 it would power the unit up and select the Coax 1 input.

Signal Sense and the Auto Power Off Feature

The Auto Power Off feature will power off the device if there is no changes made to the volume, source or input within the selected time period.

  • The Signal Sense feature takes precedence over the Auto Power Off feature.
  • If Auto Power Off is enabled, when the selected Signal Sense input is set for listening, the unit will turn off when there is no audio signal detected for ten minutes, regardless of the time selected for the Auto Power Off setting.
  • If an input other than the designated Signal Sense is set for listening, power will be controlled by the Auto Power Off setting.

Should I connect my CD player with the analog or digital outputs?

Which output should be used will matter mostly on the quality of the DACs (Digital-to-Analog-Converters) and the analog signal path in the preamplifier or processor that the Rotel CD player is being connected to. Rotel CD players utilize high quality Burr-Brown or Wolfson DACs coupled with a minimalist circuit design for the analog stage, carefully selecting quality capacitors and rectifiers and providing a solid power supply to provide the best sound quality possible from our CD players, and in many cases the DACs in the CD player will clearly exceed the sound quality of the onboard DACs from many processors.  In these cases, the analog outputs of the CD player would be the best logical choice. However, in some cases you may find in a high quality processor or outboard DAC that the DACs used may sound better than the CD players internal DACs, which would mean using the coaxial digital output.

If possible, connect both to your system and compare the two outputs to determine which sounds best in your system.
